DETERMINATION

My interest in photography began in my early teens. In those days, one could often find me tinkering with the family Kodak Advantix camera. Intrigued by the ability to capture a moment in time, I’ve been hooked ever since.

Over the years I’d tickled my obsession of photography with simple point and shoots and smartphones, but never took the plunge into larger formats. One perceived that to be a different league entirely, a place vastly more expensive that only professionals would wander.

Late 2016 came in like a storm, bringing me a stroke and paralyzing the left portion of my body. Being a cancer survivor of a brain tumor, medulloblastoma, it always lingered in my mind that the life-saving treatments (radiation & chemotherapy) provided then could lead to complications later in life. This isn’t to say my dietary habits were top notch either. With some determination, God’s will and the spirit within me, a very supportive family, and a few months of physical therapy, I was back on my feet again.

I think Randy Pausch put it best, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” Life knocks us down at times. I was determined to get back up.

Decisive Transformation

In 2017 I decided to make some drastic changes. My diet altered, and I started frequently hitting the trails in the great outdoors. Hilary Hinton "Zig" Ziglar once said “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations”, I tend to agree.

I’d only dabbled in my passion of photography for years now, concentrating on my career as a web developer foremost. Times had changed; I decided to dive deeper into the world of digital photography.

The stroke affected the entire left half of my body. Through therapy I rebuilt muscle and retrained much my motor skills, however I’ll never be the same. Despite some challenges, I still love experiencing all nature has to offer (even if I’m a little less agile). I feel fortunate to observe every sunrise and sunset.

One’s Catalyst

With the stresses and strains of everyday life, capturing the changing world that surrounds us becomes a retreat for me. I find it invigorating.

My cornerstone lies within landscapes and the great outdoors, but as my journey continues I’ve found additional interests. Being outdoors so often, it's almost impossible to avoid the creatures we share this world with. Our animal friends have also begun to form a portion of my portfolio.

“It is my intention to present - through the medium of photography - intuitive observations of the natural world which may have meaning to the spectators”.

— Ansel Adams
